Jefferson Island Salt Mines
Fall 2022 - Studio 2021 - Landscape Studio
Jefferson Island was the final project in the fall of 2022 (Studio 2021). Located about two hours outside of New Orleans, Jefferson Island is a historic landscape in southern Louisiana, with a rich history tied to a salt mine disaster that caused significant geographical changes to the land. For the first part of the project, I conducted studies of the topography and contour lines to create detailed maps and mine diagrams.

Jefferson Island Visitor’s Center
For the architectural aspect of the project, we were tasked with designing a visitor’s center for the historical site that could be placed in three different areas. I chose to focus my design near the water, incorporating it to highlight the unique history of the lake, shaped by the mining disaster. Additionally, I integrated the remnants of the pier that once served as the loading dock in the historical mine layout. The visitor center features a salt wall, mining cage, cafe, and viewing deck in an organic design inspired by the surrounding nature.
